2-Stroke Motor Cycles and Scooters

1. We don't see many 2-Stroke Motor Cycles, Scooters or Mopeds these days, why?

Ans. While 2-Stroke engines provide an attractive Power to Weight ratio, simple in design and cheaper to build, their Fuel Efficiencies are awfully low. They are bigger culprits of polluting the environment. Hence, they are being phased out.

2. Do I have a crankcase oil in a 2-Stroke Motor Cycle/Scooter/Moped?

Ans. No. Since a 2-Stroke Engine employs crankcase compression, it is not feasible to have crankcase oil for such engines. Instead, the lubricant (called a 2T Oil) is introduced along with the Fuel in the form of a lube pre-mixed fuel or injecting metered lube into the fuel stream entering the engine combustion chamber.

3. How is a 2T Engine Oil so different than a 4T Engine Oil used for bikes/cars etc?

Ans. A 2T Oil is designed to lubricate the engine components, mix-up with the fuel completely, burn and go out in the exhaust. A 4T Oil is not designed to do so. As a result, when a 4T Oil is put into in a 2T Engine, it causes spark-plug fouling, exhaust port blockage, smoke emissions etc.

4. Which Engine Oil should I use in my Motorcycle/Scooter/Moped?

Ans. HP RACER 2 LOW SMOKE. It is an oil meeting API TC and JASO FC to best suit your 2T Engine.

5. What is the oil dosage, which has to be added to the petrol?

Ans. If your motorcycle/scooter has a separate oil tank, you have to just fill the tank with HP RACER 2 LOW SMOKE. The Oil injection system in your vehicle will take care of the right dosing. In case of a premix system, 20 ml of HP RACER 2 LOW SMOKE is to be added with every litre of petrol.

6. Which oil is recommended for the gear/transmission of my 2T motorcycle/scooter?

Ans. Generally a SAE 40 Engine oil does the job. You can use HP Laal Ghoda 20W 40/HP Gear Oil EP 90.

7. What is the frequency of change of oil for the gear box of my motorcycle/scooter?

Ans. Please refer to the recommendations given in the owner’s manual as the Oil Drain Interval changes from model to model. On an average the oil should be changed every 4000 kms.

8. Why is HP Racer 2 Low Smoke is so called. How does it help controlling pollution?

Ans. HP RACER 2 LOW SMOKE is formulated with a Synthetic Component (namely a Poly-Iso-butylene) to improve lubricity and burn clean. This has resulted in avoiding Spark-plug fouling, Exhaust port/Tail Pipe Blockage, exemplary reduction in Smoke Emission, besides giving a better protection to the engine. The low smoke formula helps controlling pollution.

9. Why should not we use engine oil for diesel or petrol vehicles in my two-wheeler?

Ans. They are not designed for a 2T Engine. Hence, they will cause Spark Plug Fouling, Pre-ignition (to cause knocking), Exhaust Port/Tail Pipe blockage & would emit heavy smokes. Moreover, engine oils for other 4T Vehicles like Cars, Busses, Trucks etc., do not contain a diluent to help the oil to mix-up with petrol easily.

10. We have heard about some enforcement by Govt. of India for 2 - stroke oils. What is it?

Ans. In order to combat the serious pollution caused by a very large number of two wheelers in the country, the Ministry of Environment and Forests vide a GazetteNotification has stipulated the minimum level of 2 stroke engine oil as JASO FC and API TC, which is a Low Smoke Oil.

11. What is JASO FC oil?

Ans. JASO is Japanese Automobile Standard Organization and JASO FC is a specification issued by them for 2 - stroke 2 - wheeler oils. Over the years, a specification issued by JASO has gained importance because of its special emphasis on controlling smoke.

4-stroke Motor Cycles

1. How is lubrication different in a 4-stroke 2-wheeler as compared to a car?

Ans. A car employs a dry clutch that doesn’t need an oil. Engine and Gearbox are lubricated with dedicated Engine Oil and Gear Oil respectively. However, in a 4-Stroke 2-Wheeler (also called 4T Motor Cycle) you have a wet-clutch, Engine and Transmission all lubricated by a common oil.

Moreover, the 4T bikes operate at a far more engine rpm and power density than the cars and are generally air-cooled unlike car engines which are water-cooled. In other word, the 4T MCO is exposed to higher temperature and much more operational severity than a Car Engine Oil.

2. Do I need a special oil for my 4T Motor Cycle?

Ans. Yes, you need a 4T Motor Cycle Oil. Such Oil will have JASO Clutch Friction Credentials like JASO T 903 MA, MA1 or MA2 to work satisfactorily with the wet-clutch. An oil having API SJ/SL with JASO T 903 MA/MA2 would be the best bet for your Motor Cycle.

4-stroke Scooters

1. How is lubrication different in a 4-stroke Motor Cylce as compared to a 4-Stroke Scooter?

Ans. Besides lubricating Engine and Transmission, a 4T Motor Cycle Oil also lubricates the wet-clutch. Hence needs some friction in the oil to avoid clutch slippage and ensure smooth clutch engagement.

A 4-Stroke scooter generally employs a CVT belt drive and a centrifugal clutch. Hence, the oil's work is limited to Engine and Transmission lubrication. In other word, we can have an oil with as little friction as we can.

2. Do I need a special oil for my 4T Scooter?

Ans. Yes, you need a 4T Scooter Oil. Such Oil will have JASO Clutch Friction Credentials like JASO T 903 MB (indicating a very low friction in oil) to yield maximum fuel efficiency. An oil having API SL with JASO T 903 MB would be the best bet for your 4T Gearless Scooter.

Radiator Coolant

1. Why a car needs a coolant?

Ans. When you Fuel is burnt inside the run your car engine, it produces a lot of heat. Only a part of it gets converted into power. Out of the rest of the heat, some part rejected out of the engine through the hot exhaust gases, while the balance keeps heating the engine parts. We need a radiator to keep the engine cool and continue performing.

Apart from cooling the engine, a coolant performs the following functions:

  • Capable of providing Anti freezing properties and boiling protection
  • Protection of metals against corrosion

2. Which coolant is recommended for my car?

Ans. HP KOOLGARD, a concentrate is recommended at 30% - 50% concentrations with water. HP THANDA RAJA is a ready to use coolant, which can be used as it is.

3. What is the correct way of changing the coolant in a car?

Ans. When the engine is warm (NOT HOT) open the radiator drain plug or remove bottom hose.

  • Ensure your car is parked on level ground with the hand brake applied
  • Set heater control to 'hot'
  • Replace drain plug / radiator hose
  • Remove radiator cap. Use a water pressure hose to flush out old coolant
  • Put recommended quantity of HP Koolgard into radiator. Top up with water and replace cap
  • Run engine for 5 minutes. Check water level and top up if necessary

Complete flushing and renewal of your engine coolant should occur at least every two years. Once every year engine coolant changes are desirable, if concentration is not well maintained. Most car engines have a coolant system which requires a glycol based coolant mixed with water. The glycol base acts as an anti - freeze and maintains the physical characteristics of coolant, which continuously protects your engine parts from corrosion and damage. The concentration of HP Koolgard in water should be minimum 30%, or as per vehicle manufacturer's recommendation, so as to attain complete protection.

Please check:Keep a close watch on radiator hose and fittings. A damaged radiator hose or a loose fitting may result in leakage and overheating. Check the pressure of the radiator cap. Keep observing the change in colour of water being drained from the radiator; it can give you an indication of your engine's health.

Car Maintenance Tips

Lubricating Your Car Engine

Oils play a major role in determining the life and the performance of your car engine. Check oil level at least once in two weeks and without fail before a long trip.Opening the bonnet and pulling out the dipstick can do this. The calibrated dipstick will indicate the level of oil. Certain cars have an indicator on their dashboard, which glows when the engine is low on oil and lubrication is not happening properly. Check the level and fill it if needed. Do not drive on low engine oil. Generally this indicator glows for a moment, when you start the car, but if it persists, it could be a serious matter and should be examined by a competent person. Improperly oil pressured engine means that lubrication is not taking place and could result in the serious breakdown. It should be checked and corrected. Regularly check the tension of the fan belt and its condition from outside. It is important to keep in mind that it operates crucial engine accessories like the water pump, alternator etc.

Engine Oil

Check the oil after every fill up. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean. Insert it fully and remove it again. If it is low, add oil. Getting your oil changed is the most important service - and the one that is usually delayed the longest. Changing your oil regularly removes the harmful dirt and contaminants that cause engine wear. To maintain peak performance, the oil should be changed every 10000 km or as per the manufacturer's recommendation in the car owner's manual. Beware of quick - stop lube joints though. They may hire unskilled people who use your vehicle for on - the - job training. You run the risk of mistakes, which can result in engine damage in worst - case scenarios.

Oil Filter

To maintain peak performance, change oil filter every 10000 km or as referred to in the car owner's manual. Replace oil filter with every oil change.
